The single most important healthy weight loss tip is that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. But just because breakfast is the most important meal does not mean it should be the biggest meal. Many people make the mistake of loading up for breakfast because they think they should eat a big meal to start the day. By eating smart and healthy at breakfast, you can jumpstart your metabolism and enjoy the true benefits of breakfast.
Breakfast is considered the most important meal of the day because it is the first energy your body receives after 7-8 hours of sleep. Essentially, you are “breaking the fast” from a period in which your body consumes nothing but still burns calories.
People used to load up for the day at breakfast by eating bacon and eggs, bread and/or potatoes of some sort with butter, and maybe even steak. The reason people could eat a breakfast like that on a daily basis 50-75 years ago was because they worked all day in the fields, on the farm, or doing manual labor jobs for 40-60 hours per week. People used to burn more calories because of the way life was.
Life has obviously changed with technology and education, so the majority of people no longer do these kinds of things. Many people now work in offices, on the computer or phone, or from their car. Many people work inside in air-conditioned buildings rather than out in the hot sun. People do not burn the same amount of calories our grandparents and great-grandparents did. With that in mind, the breakfast of today should be designed simply to wake your body up with the energy it needs until your next snack or meal and get the metabolism going.
To get your metabolism started in the morning, you should consume around 300-400 calories. Try to get some protein and fiber, as your carbohydrates will come in easily throughout the rest of the day. Eggs are a great source of protein, but do not eat more than two a day or you could see a rise in your bad cholesterol. A piece of fruit is a good addition to your breakfast. Also, a cup of coffee will help rev up your metabolism, and coffee is healthy as long as it is not loaded with sugar and cream or milk.
