What exactly is interval training? Example of a workout?

I’ve read numerous times that interval workouts are the best to lose fat and tone up. Can someone explain what a typical “interval training workout” would be? Thanks.

Here is a good starter HIIT routine.
Jog for 10 minutes (slowly) until your muscles are warm. Use a stopwatch. Sprint for 30 seconds as HARD AS YOU CAN! Around 25 seconds you should start to feel like you can’t do any more… If you start to feel like this earlier, your going too hard. If you don’t get to this point, go harder next time… your legs should be BURNING for the last 5 seconds. Then, slow down and walk/slow job for 90 seconds.
Repeat this 30 seconds hard 90 seconds easy for about 8 repeats; aka 16 minutes.
You can do the same with biking, swimming, whatever. The hard should be HARD. The light should be very light (BUT STILL MOVING!)
Those are beginner intervals.
When you get better, intermediate is 30 seconds hard, 60 easy.
Advanced is 30 hard, 30 easy
All for 8-10 reps.
